The Angolan kwanza, code AOA. It is the only legal tender in Angola. Outside the top hotels in Luanda, you pay in kwanza.
Can I pay with US dollars in Angola?
Some upscale hotels in Luanda quote prices in dollars, but taxis, markets, restaurants and anything outside Luanda expect kwanza. Plan to pay in kwanza.
Where do I exchange money in Angola?
At the airport on arrival, at banks, at licensed exchange bureaus (casas de câmbio) or at your hotel. Never change money with people on the street.
Can I get kwanza before I travel?
Hardly. The kwanza is rarely sold outside Angola. Bring clean US dollars or euros and change them after you land.
Are there ATMs in Angola?
Yes, Multicaixa ATMs are common in Luanda and provincial capitals, with daily limits around USD 100 to 200. They are rare in rural areas and only give kwanza.
