Who we are
This website, Angola Travel Guide (angolatravelguide.com), is an independent travel guide about Angola. For anything related to your personal data, contact us atinfo@angolatravelguide.com.
What we collect, and why
Contact forms and newsletter
When you use one of our forms (the request form below our travel guides and on the contact page, the guide request, the welcome package form or the newsletter sign-up), we receive the details you fill in, such as your name, email address, your optional WhatsApp number, your travel plans or question, and the page you sent the form from. These are sent to our own mailbox by email and are not stored in a website database. You receive an automatic confirmation summarising what you sent. We use your details only to answer you; we never pass them on or use them for advertising. To limit abuse, the form applies a short-lived submission limit per internet address; this is kept in memory only and is not stored.
"Email this to me"
When you ask us to email a page, a report or a selection of hotels or restaurants to yourself, we use your email address only to send that one email. The content of the email comes from our own website; you cannot add a message to it. Your address is not stored in a database and you are not added to any mailing list. To stop people from using this feature to send large numbers of emails, we keep a one-way code of the email address and of your internet address, without the addresses themselves, for 48 hours. Only if you tick "I would like help from your team" or "Send me occasional travel updates" do we also receive your address in our mailbox, so we can do what you asked. If you tick "Remember my email address on this device", it is stored in your own browser only.
Accounts and travel stories
Creating an account is optional and only needed to read and submit travel stories. Login works with a magic link: we store your email address with our authentication provider (Supabase) and place session cookies only when you log in. Stories you submit are reviewed before publication and are stored with your account. You can ask us to delete your account and stories at any time via the email address above.
Travel advice tool
The free travel advice tool stores only your anonymous answers (such as travel style and season) so your report gets a permanent link. No name, email address or other personal data is stored with a report. To prevent abuse we store a hashed, non-reversible version of your internet address for rate limiting.
Reader counter
Some articles show how many people have read them. For this we store a one-way hash of your internet address combined with the article, so we can count unique readers without being able to identify you or link your visits across articles. Raw internet addresses are not stored.
Search questions
When you ask the search help (chatbot), use the search bar, or describe what you are looking for in the hotel search, the restaurant finder or the guide search, we store the words you typed, the page you were on, how many results were found, which result you opened and, if you tell us, whether the answer helped. We use this only to learn what travellers are looking for and to improve the guide. No internet address, cookie or account is stored with it, and email addresses and phone numbers are removed from the text before it is saved. Please do not type personal details into the search. These questions are deleted after 24 months.
Your location in the restaurant finder
The "Near me" button in the restaurant finder asks your browser for your location, and only after you tap it and give permission. The location is used inside your browser to sort restaurants by distance. It is not sent to us or stored.
Visitor statistics without cookies
To understand how the guide is used, we count page views and a few actions for every visitor, such as opening the search help, clicking WhatsApp, clicking a partner link or sending a form. This works without cookies and without storing anything on your device. For each request we record the page, the website you came from, campaign tags in the link, your country (derived from your internet address), your device type and browser name. Your internet address itself is never stored: it is combined with your browser details and a random value that is replaced and deleted every day, and only the resulting one-way code is kept. That lets us count the same visitor once per day, but not recognise you on another day or identify you. We do this on the basis of our legitimate interest in improving the site, and delete these records after 25 months.
Google Analytics, only with consent
We use Google Analytics 4 with Consent Mode v2. By default everything is set todenied: no analytics cookies are placed and Google receives only anonymous, cookieless signals. Only if you click "Accept" in the cookie banner do we enable analytics storage, so Google Analytics can also measure your visit. Advertising storage remains disabled in all cases. See the cookie policy for details and for how to change your choice.
Hosting
The site is hosted on Vercel. Like any web server, the hosting platform processes technical request data (such as internet addresses) in short-lived logs to deliver the site and guard against abuse.
Data stored in your own browser
Some conveniences are stored only in your browser (localStorage) and never reach us: your cookie choice, the ticked items in the trip countdown planner, unsent answers in the travel advice tool and, only if you ask for it, the email address for "Email this to me". You can clear these at any time via your browser settings.
Links to other websites
Some outbound links are affiliate links, always marked as sponsored; see thedisclaimer. Once you leave our site, the privacy policy of the website you visit applies.
How long we keep data
Emails from the forms are kept as long as needed to help you and for our records. Account data and stories are kept until you delete your account or ask us to. Anonymous travel advice reports and reader-counter hashes are kept to keep permalinks and counters working. Anonymous search questions are deleted after 24 months, cookieless visitor statistics after 25 months.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you can ask us to access, correct or delete the personal data we hold about you, or object to how we use it. Email us atinfo@angolatravelguide.com and we will respond as soon as we can. You also have the right to complain to your national data protection authority.
Changes to this policy
If the way the site works changes, we update this page and the date at the top.
